2025 Oscar Nominations

Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and The Brutalist lead nominations

The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were released Thursday morning after being pushed back due to the fires in Southern California. Unlike last year, when Oppenheimer dominated the entire nomination list, this year’s list has many top contenders. Emilia Pérez leads the nominations with 13 including Best Picture, the most by a non-English-language film in Oscar history. In close second comes Wicked and The Brutalist, both with 10 nominations. Dune: Part Two, Conclave, Anora, A Complete Unknown, and The Substance are all featured prominently in the lineup.

Noticeably missing from the list were actors such as Angelina Jolie (Maria), Denzel Washington (Gladiator II), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), and Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl). Challengers, which received accolades at the 2024 Golden Globes and the Critic’s Choice awards, did not receive any Oscar nominations. Also surprising is the absence of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, who’s predecessor, Mad Max: Fury Road, swept the 88th Academy Awards in 2016.

Despite the somewhat surprising snubs, this year’s Oscars should prove to be a wide-open race in many categories. With so many great films in the running this year, the 97th Academy Awards are truly anybody’s game, unlike what we have seen in recent years.
