Sunrise on the Reaping: Movies Starring Woody Harrelson
If you’re like me, then you’ve been patiently waiting 8 months (271 days, 19 hours, 12 minutes, and 48 seconds—but who’s counting?) for the release of Suzanne Collins’ latest Hunger Games novel: Sunrise on the Reaping. While we’re now just two weeks away from its release, the closer we get, the more impatient I become. So here’s a list of movies I will be watching to hold myself over starring Haymitch himself, the one and only Woody Harrelson.
Last Breath (2025)
Last Breath is a true story that follows seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging elements to rescue their crew mate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean's surface.
Woody Harrelson plays Duncan Allcock, unofficial mentor to Chris Lemons and a sort of “team captain” of the dive crew.
Similarity to Haymitch: 9/10 (Great mentor but without the toxic traits)
Triangle of Sadness (2022)
Celebrity model couple, Carl and Yaya, are invited on a luxury cruise for the uber-rich, helmed by an unhinged boat captain. What first appeared instagrammable ends catastrophically, leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island and fighting for survival.
Woody Harrelson plays the yacht’s captain, Thomas Smith, who spends most of his time drunk in his cabin.
Similarity to The Hunger Games: 6/10 (Harrelson plays a drunk? Check. Social commentary about class? Check. Survival of the fittest? Check.)
Now You See Me (2013)
An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists known as The Four Horsemen who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money.
Woody Harrelson plays Merritt McKinney, a magician known as The Mentalist.
Similarity to Haymitch: 6/10 (McKinney is a has been mentoring younger magicians)
Out of the Furnace (2013)
A blue-collar worker in a dying Rust Belt town must confront a ruthless crime lord to find his missing brother, forcing him to risk everything to seek justice in a world where the law offers no answers.
Woody Harrelson plays Harlan DeGroat, a meth dealer and a crime lord.
Similarity to Haymitch: 4/10 (He has anger management issues, and, to be fair, their body count may be similar—but Haymitch is more sympathetic)
