Adult Best Friends

A coming-of-age film for millenials

Written by and starring real-life best friends Delaney Buffett & Katie Corwin, Adult Best Friends is a coming-of-age comedy about a woman who takes her best friend on a weekend trip to break the news that she’s getting married. Buffett & Corwin write from experience, interlacing authenticity and emotion into every scene with a lived-in authenticity that makes the story feel both intimate and universal.

Just like their real-life counterparts, Delaney (played by Delaney Buffett) and Katie (Katie Corwin) became friends at ten years old and have been inseparable ever since. Years later, Katie is the picture of domestic bliss while Delaney seems to be trying her best to find herself, to put it lightly. Though they've grown into complete opposites, it’s clear they love each other deeply despite their many flaws and differences. Katie prefers picnics and early morning ceramic classes while Delaney can be found nearly every night of the week at a party (usually in the bathroom doing cocaine) or complaining on the couch alongside her overly-negative roommate, Roxy (Cazzie David).

When Katie gets engaged to her boyfriend, John (Mason Gooding), she knows Delaney is going to have a hard time accepting this change (she hasn’t kept her disdain for John a secret). So Katie plans a weekend trip she dubs “Katie and Delaney’s Beach Adventure,” planning to break the news to her there. As Katie struggles to find the perfect moment to break the news, Delaney clings desperately to the past—leading to plenty of hilarity, awkwardness, and comedic chaos.

Buffett & Corwin have an effortless chemistry that carries the film through the highs and lows, keeping the story grounded in their relationship. But the film also boasts an excellent ensemble supporting cast, each bringing a new layer of story and comedy. Zachary Quinto (who also executive produced), in a rare but well delivered comedic role, plays Katie’s brother who gives out unsolicited and highly problematic secondhand psychological diagnosis based on what he overhears of his wife’s (Heather Mazur) therapy sessions.

At its core, Adult Best Friends is a thoughtful exploration of how friendships must evolve as we grow older. Like Delaney, many of us cling to the past, expecting our friendships to stay the same even as life inevitably moves forward. But what Adult Best Friends gets right is that it’s okay, good even, when friendships grow alongside us. Anyone who has had a best friend through life’s ups and downs will see themselves in Katie and Delaney. With its perfect balance of sincerity and sharp humor, Adult Best Friends delivers an emotional, hilarious, and deeply relatable 90 minutes.

Buffett & Corwin bring a fresh, female-driven perspective to the coming-of-age buddy comedy, proving that the evolving dynamics of adult friendships—when grounded in authenticity—can be just as compelling as any love story. With this sharp, heartfelt debut, Buffett & Corwin prove they’re a filmmaking duo to watch.
